History of Sheikh Salim Chishti Tomb

Sheikh Salim Chishti is said to be a descendant of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti of Ajmer. He lived near Fatehpur Sikri village, and Akbar revered him. It’s believed that Emperor Akbar sought the blessings of the saint to have an heir to his throne.

The saint blessed the emperor, and soon enough, a prince was born. This kid was named Salim (later called Jahangir) after the saint.

When Salim Chishti died, he was buried near the imperial complex of Fatehpur Sikri Fort. And Akbar constructed this tomb over the burial place. It’s considered one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture in India.

Architecture of Tomb of Hazrat Salim Chishti

The tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti was built by Emperor Akbar. But the white marble structure which you see today is believed to be built over the original structure by his son Jahangir. The original structure was only the small inner tomb chamber, built with red sandstone.

This current monument is built with Makrana marble, known for its quality and texture. It’s an ensemble of Indian and Persian architectural styles. And it has a mix of elements from both Hindu and Islamic architecture.

This marble building is on a 1-metre-high platform. It’s beautifully carved, and it’s ornamented with mosaics of black and yellow marble. A flight of five steps leads to the entrance portico, which is enclosed by delicate jail screens (carved out of marble) on all sides.

The main tomb chamber is in the center of the building. An ebony “chhaparkhat” surrounds the marble cenotaph, covered by a green cloth.

Spectacular floral and geometric motifs cover the walls of the inner chamber. It has a white marble floor, inlaid with multi-coloured stones. And the door to the chamber has arabesque patterns carved on it. It also bears inscriptions from the Quran.

Each thread represents a wish or prayer, and it’s believed that tying them increases the likelihood of the wish being fulfilled. Many women visit the tomb and tie a thread in the hope of being blessed by a child.

2. Admiring the architecture – Salim Chishti’s Tomb stands distinct from other monuments in the fort. This white marble building is an exquisite architectural marvel in itself. Take your time to appreciate the fusion of architectural styles, and savour the patterns and motifs. Its intricate carvings and delicate marble screens show the level of craftsmanship of the Mughals.

You can visit Hazrat Salim Chishti Tomb Fatehpur Sikri anytime during the year. Its opening timings are from sunrise to sunset.

The entry fee for the tomb is included with Fatehpur Sikri Fort ticket. It costs ₹50 per person for Indian, SAARC and BIMSTEC country visitors. For other country nationals, the ticket price is ₹610. Kids below 15 years get free entry.

Winter is the best season to visit Salim Chishti’s tomb. It’s between November and February when the weather is the most suitable for visiting the tourist attractions in Fatehpur Sikri. Visit in the morning or late afternoon hours for a pleasant experience.

It takes only about half an hour to explore the tomb. However, you must have at least 2-3 hours for a proper visit. The fort complex has several historical buildings from the Mughal era to explore. And it’s spread across a large area.

A small Fatehpur Sikri railway station is the nearest to the tomb, only 3 km away. From Agra airport, it’s 34 km away. But the nearest international airport is in Delhi (215 km away).

By train – You can take a train from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri. The station is only 3 km away from the tomb. And you can get an auto-rickshaw from the station.

By auto/e-rickshaw – Another popular way to visit the Tomb of Hazrat Salim Chishti is to take an auto-rickshaw from Agra itself. They’re available everywhere in the city.
