All about Gurdwara Guru ka Tal, Agra

Gurdwara Guru ka Tal, also known as Gurudwara Dukh Nivaaran Guru Ka Tal, located near Sikandra in Agra, is a significant pilgrimage destination for Sikhs.

Originally a Tal (reservoir) built in 1610 AD during the reign of Jahangir, it served the practical purpose of collecting rainwater for irrigation. However, its historical importance heightened when Guru Tegh Bahadur chose this very spot to make a stand against religious persecution.

The Gurudwara, named Guru Ka Tal, was erected in the 1970s, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Sant Baba Sadhu Singh ji Mauni.

The entire premises of the Gurudwara is adorned with lush green gardens, with bushes shaped like various animals. The spiritual ambience is boosted by the continuous chanting of the saints, creating an atmosphere of devotion.

The Gurudwara's community kitchen, or Langar, operates 24 hours, ensuring that nourishing meals are available around the clock for all visitors and devotees.

A significant and sacred spot within the Gurudwara is Bhora Sahib, where Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji spent nine days in confinement under the rule of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.

It is a revered tradition for devotees to humbly bow and touch their heads to the ground to seek blessings from Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji at this special location.

Twelve towers once adorned the Tal, but today, eight are resilient against time.

History of Gurdwara Guru ka Tal, Agra

Originally constructed as a reservoir in the 17th century, the site gained historical significance when Guru Tegh Bahadur offered himself up for arrest to Aurangzeb when he didn't follow Aurangzeb's order to convert to Islam.

It is believed that Aurangzeb set up a reward of Rs 500 to anyone who gave information about the whereabouts of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

As Guru Tegh Bahadur would submit himself voluntarily, he allowed Hasan Ali, a poor shepherd, to benefit from the reward money.
