Birbal’s Palace (or Birbal’s House) is an architectural masterpiece from the Mughal era. It’s an ornately carved red sandstone structure that spans two storeys. And it’s a place where many intellectual debates and meaningful conversations thrived in the past.

Historical evidence suggests that Fatehpur Sikri Birbal’s Palace was the residence of Ruqayya Begum and Salima Sultan Begum. They were Emperor Akbar’s two senior queens.

But local people believe it to be the palace of Birbal. He was a minister in the court of Emperor Akbar, and his trusted advisor. Birbal was counted as one of the “Nine Jewels” of the court.

Birbal’s House is one of the popular tourist spots in Fatehpur Sikri. It’s an amalgam of Mughal and Indian architecture. The monument is a witness to the bond between Akbar and Birbal. And it’s a reminder of Birbal’s invaluable counsel.

Where is Birbal’s Palace in Fatehpur Sikri?

Birbal’s Palace is in the Fatehpur Sikri Fort, about 36 km away from Agra. It’s close to Jodha Bai’s Palace, and it seems like an integral part of the Haram Sara palace. The building is one of the several monuments built for administrative, residential and religious purposes.

Things to do at Agra Birbal Palace

1. Checking out its architecture – Birbal’s House is a double-dome residential structure with a spellbinding architecture. It’s an elaborate monument with exquisite carvings on the walls and pillars, making for excellent photo backdrops.

The ground storey is made up of four rooms and two porches, while the upper one has two rooms. It also has open terraces enclosed by screens. One of the most notable elements here is the presence of sloping shades (chhajjas) on each level. They, along with the double dome, help in keeping the interior cool.

2. Exploring the history – The palace offers a journey into the lifestyle of the court during the Mughal period. Hire a guide, and you’ll be able to relive the stories from the era. A guided tour helps you understand the rich heritage and culture of the bygone era.

3. Visiting the fort complex – Birbal’s Palace is located within the Fatehpur Sikri complex, which is home to several other architectural marvels. Jodha Bai’s Palace, Panch Mahal and Rang Mahal are a few of the must-explore places here. Some other places worth exploring are Buland Darwaja, Diwan-e-Aam and Jama Masjid. You should also pay your respects at Sheikh Salim Chishti’s Tomb.

4. Shopping near the fort – You’ll find several shops and roadside stalls near Fatehpur Sikri Fort. They sell a variety of souvenir items, including handcrafted clothes and accessories and traditional jewellery. Ceramic arts, marble home decor pieces and attars (perfume oils) are also quite popular.
