All about the Taj Museum, Agra

The Taj Museum was built between 1899 and 1905, but later, in 1982, it was modernised by Khan Bahadur Hassan. It is located inside the Taj Mahal complex on the western end of the Taj Gardens. It is one of the most famous museums in India.

This museum is inside the Taj Mahal, one of the World's Seven Wonders. It has many old things from the time of the Mughal Empire, like their belongings and artworks. When people see the Taj Mahal, they also visit this museum to see and learn about the Mughal period.

The museum features three distinct galleries:

First Gallery

This section is filled with art of Calligraphy which reflects Shah Jahan's admiration for this form. Carved jade articles adorned with calligraphic art are on display, along with everyday items from the Mughal era, such as bowls, celadon dishes, lotus vases, and porcelain items.

It is believed that celadon utensils change colour when exposed to poison. The final part of the museum showcases weapons like daggers and swords straight from the Mughal era.

Second Gallery

This section is dedicated to paintings, particularly those of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. It houses a diverse collection of paintings in various sizes and shapes. Some are created on different objects and some on ivory also. You can also find miniature paintings in this collection.

Third Gallery

This gallery focuses on drawings and paintings related to the mausoleum and features artworks and photographs depicting the Taj Mahal over the past decades. The display includes the site plan of the Taj Mahal and documents every step of its construction. Additionally, a coins gallery exhibits silver and gold coins minted in Akbarabad during the Mughal reign.

Main Room

In this central space, exclusive items are showcased, including:

  • The 17th-century Chechel Majlis manuscript with the signature of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and the royal seal of his reign.
  • Royal court documents from Shah Jahan's era.
  • 18th-century paintings of the Taj Mahal.
  • Documents related to the fruit auction of produce from the Taj Mahal garden.
  • Land grant documents.
