Anoop Talab (or Anoop Talao) is a magnificent, ornamental pool, also reckoned as a pool of soulful ragas. It served as an open auditorium back in the Mughal era.

The pond is a red sandstone structure with an elevated platform in the middle of the pond and seating places around it. Musicians like Tansen, the famous classical musician, performed for the emperor here. The walkways to the platform divide the pond into four squares.

Fatehpur Sikri Anoop Talao acted as a private retreat for Emperor Akbar to indulge in the music and admire the surrounding beauty. He was fond of music and arts, and the pond enabled him to enjoy those.

Where is Anoop Talab in Fatehpur Sikri?

Anup Talao is in front of Daulat Khana (also known as Khwabgah), Akbar’s private quarters in Fatehpur Sikri Fort. While the fort complex has several other monuments, this pond is one of the most beautiful sites here. It’s 36 km away from Agra.

Things to do at Anoop Talab

1. Exploring the architecture – Anup Talao is a magnificent, red sandstone structure with a square platform in the middle. Walkways on four sides connect this platform to the courtyard. The walkways and the platform, both, have beautiful jaalidar balustrades for safety, and they’re supported by pillars jutting up from the water. Back in the day, the pond was connected to the main water system to ensure a regular inflow of fresh water.

2. Listening to the pool’s history – As per old texts and records, it’s claimed that the tank was filled with gold, copper and silver coins. Jehangir gave away most of those coins later in charity. Several other stories and myths are related to the pool. If you hire a guide, you’ll be better able to understand the history of Anoob Talab and the places surrounding it.

3. Enjoying the calmness – Anoop Talab has viewing and seating arrangements around it. Emperor Akbar and his ministers used to sit by the pool and listen to musical performances in the evening. While those events don’t take place now, you can still take a pause and feel the serene air surrounding the place.

4. Taking a tour of the fort – The pond is surrounded by several notable monuments from the Mughal era. Fatehpur Sikri complex offers a glimpse of the grandeur from that time. Daulat Khana (or Khwabgah), Panch Mahal and Jodha Bai’s Palace are some of the popular ones you must visit. Diwan-e-Khas and Buland Darwaza are also close. Each structure has its own historical and architectural significance.

5. Shopping for souvenirs – Fatehpur Sikri also has several souvenir shops around the fort. They sell different local handicraft items ranging from traditional clothes to colourful jewellery. Handmade accessories, artistic ceramic items and marble home decor are also worth buying. Another item popular from the Mughal era is attars (or perfume oils).

Anoop Talao Timings and Entry Fees

Anup Talao in Fatehpur Sikri is open throughout the day, from sunrise to sunset. You can visit it anytime during the year, but the best weather is during winter – from November to February. Fatehpur Sikri weather is the most comfortable during those days.

You must have at least 2-3 hours for the visit. The fort complex has several must-visit historical places apart from Anoop Talao.

The entry fee is included with Fatehpur Sikri’s ticket. It costs ₹50 per person for Indian, SAARC and BIMSTEC citizens. For other foreign nationals, the ticket price is ₹610. Kids below 15 years get free entry.
